Make a profit, make a difference?

Investors invest to make a profit. They want the best return for their buck in the shortest possible time span. Social responsibility does not usually come into play when people are deciding where to place their money. Of course, when they think aboutsocial responsibility they immediately equate it with having to sacrifice returns.

GDP slows due to contraction in mining

South Africa’s economic growth rate slowed to 2,1% in the first quarter of 2008 on a seasonally adjusted and annualised basis, official data showed on Tuesday, citing a sharp drop in mining due to a power crisis. Statistics South Africa said Q1 GDP slowed from 5,3% in the fourth quarter of 2007.

Reitz hostel to close after race storm

A South African university residence where a racist video degrading black workers was filmed earlier this year is being closed down, a spokesperson said on Monday. The homemade video, filmed by students of the Reitz residence at the University of the Free State, caused outrage when it was leaked in February.

MDC says 50 killed in violent attacks

A month before a presidential election run-off, Zimbabwe’s opposition said on Tuesday conditions were not conducive for a free and fair poll, but still expressed confidence it would oust Robert Mugabe. "As of yesterday [Monday], at least 50 of our supporters had been killed in violent attacks." the Movement for Democratic Change said.

Mogadishu attack death toll rises to 18

The death toll from a fierce clash sparked by an Islamist insurgent attack on a Ugandan base in Mogadishu rose to 18 on Tuesday, witnesses and officials said. Late on Monday, a large group of insurgents attacked a major base in the Somali capital housing a Ugandan contingent of African Union peacekeepers.

Japanese plan to brew ‘space beer’

A Japanese brewery on Tuesday said it was planning the first "space beer", using offspring of barley once stored at the International Space Station. Researchers said the project was part of efforts to prepare for a future in which humans spend extended periods of time in space — and might like a cold beer after a space walk.

FF+ slams closure of Reitz men’s residence

The University of the Free State’s handling of the Reitz saga has not contributed to reconciliation, the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) said on Tuesday. FF Plus leader in the Free State Abrie Oosthuizen said the decision by the university to close the Reitz residence was an act of subservience to the African National Congress.
