Power restored to Kempton Park

Power was restored to Kempton Park on Gauteng’s East Rand at about 3.30am on Tuesday after just under seven days of darkness, the Ekurhuleni municipality said. Spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said an investigation into the cause of the power failure was under way.

Adebayor nets three as Gunners thrash Derby

Emmanuel Adebayor came off the bench to score a hat-trick as Arsenal thrashed already relegated Premier League basement side Derby County 6-2 at Pride Park on Monday. It was the second time this season the Gunners had inflicted a heavy defeat upon the Rams after their 5-0 win at the Emirates Stadium in September.

Telkom implements 010 area code in Johannesburg

Telkom has introduced a second area code for Johannesburg, which will operate alongside the existing 011 code. "Following an announcement of a move to the mandatory 10-digit dialling, Telkom has recently been allocated … the first batch of numbers in the 010 area code for use within the same geographic boundary as the existing 011 code," Telkom said on Tuesday.

Waterkloof Four take battle to high court

The so-called Waterkloof Four turn to the Pretoria High Court on Tuesday to ask it to overturn the effective 12-year prison sentence they were given for beating a homeless man to death and assaulting another man. The four will ask the high court to set aside both the guilty verdict of the lower court and the sentence.

Wall Street expects Microsoft to enter a protracted period of ”trench warfare” in its attempt to buy Yahoo! after the failure of its three-month-long attempt to bring the online company’s board to the negotiating table. It is expected to launch a proxy battle and try to oust the Yahoo! executive team while encouraging investors to accept its original -a-share offer.

Amnesty: Mozambique cops killing with impunity

Police in Mozambique are killing and torturing people with near total impunity, according to a report by Amnesty International released on Tuesday. "Police in Mozambique seem to think they have a licence to kill, and the weak police accountability system allows for this," Michelle Kagari, deputy director of Amnesty International’s Africa Programme, said.

Representatives of the world’s leading gas producers are discussing Russian proposals for greater cooperation, according to the Iranian Oil Ministry. Ministers from the Gas Exporting Countries Forum are meeting amid speculation that members are considering an Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec)-style club for gas producers.

S Korea probes Chinese violence at torch relay

South Korea’s Foreign Ministry has voiced its concern to the Chinese ambassador in Seoul over violent incidents during the Olympic torch relay in the capital, and a police investigation is under way, an official said on Tuesday. South Korean newspapers ran angry editorials denouncing Chinese students who hurled rocks at groups criticising Beijing.
