Foreign tourist robbed at Westcliff Hotel

A foreign tourist was robbed of his luggage upon his arrival at Johannesburg’s Westcliff Hotel from the OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday, said a hotel spokesperson. Another two tourists, who were in the reception area checking out at the time, were also robbed of their bags, said Gabrielle Palmer.

Weary Bangladesh slump against SA

Roqibul Hassan and Shakib Al Hasan hit half centuries as a struggling Bangladesh reached 173 for all wickets in 48.2 overs in the second one-day international against South Africa on Wednesday. South Africa’s pacer Andre Nel finished for 4-27 and Charl Langeveldt took three for 31 to bundle out the hosts for a paltry score.

Blatter lends ear to NUM

Fifa president Sepp Blatter showed his solidarity with the construction workers who are getting 10 stadiums in South Africa ready for the 2010 World Cup. Blatter met with leaders of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on Tuesday and said he wanted them to be treated fairly while building and upgrading World Cup venues.

Mugabe awards big pay-hike to civil servants

President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe has awarded large pay hikes to civil servants, including teachers, ahead of March 29 polls, local news reports said on Wednesday. Addressing a rally on Tuesday at a school in Inyathi, in the country’s Matabeleland North province, Mugabe said he had signed the new salary schedule earlier in the week.

Oil bubbles near $109

Oil prices were close to $109 in Asian trade on Wednesday, underpinned by the United States dollar’s dive to a new low against the euro and supply concerns, dealers said. In late morning trade, New York’s main contract, light sweet crude for April delivery, traded briefly at $108,90 a barrel, up 15 cents from its record closing high of $108,75 on Tuesday.
