Continuity is the name of the game

Short of his falling out of an SUV speeding the wrong way down Moscow’s traffic-congested roads, there was never any doubt that Dmitry Medvedev would be elected Russia’s next president. The out-going president, Vladimir Putin, picked Medvedev as his successor and no challenger had a chance of beating the Kremlin’s choice.

It has been an uplifting week. The women who took back the taxi ranks in marches last Friday and on Monday this week deserve a bow from all of us. What they have done is not only to assert that the miniskirt is women’s to wear as we will, but also that public spaces are there for the public.

Swallows too strong for Leopards

Moroka Swallows hammered struggling Black Leopards 3-1 in their Premier Soccer League match played at Thohoyandou Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The score was level 1-1 at half-time. The home side, Leopards, were the first to score as early as the 12th minute when striker Mulondo Sikhwivhilu put the ball in the net.

Sundowns beat Arrows 2-1

Mamelodi Sundowns beat Lamontville Golden Arrows 2-1 in their Premier Soccer League clash at King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Sundowns led 1-0 at half-time. Trott Moloto’s lads won with goals from Aldave Benitez in the 42nd minute and Fanyana Dhladhla in the 55th minute.

Celtic stumble against Pirates

Vulgar blog language lands teen in court

A United States teen who used vulgar slang in an internet blog to complain about school administrators should not have been punished by the school, her lawyer told a federal appeals court this week. But a lawyer for the school said administrators should be allowed to act if such comments are made on the web.

Eskom to speed up lamp-exchange drive

Incandescent lamps will be exchanged for energy-saving lamps in all provinces from April onwards, Eskom said on Wednesday. The exchange programme for compact fluorescent lamps is already under way in several of the country’s provinces and has seen more than 12-million lamps distributed in three years.
