SA names new nuke partners

South Africa’s advanced nuclear reactor technology programme will include United States-based Westinghouse Electric as a partner and a new shareholders’ contract is expected by the end of the month, an official said on Tuesday. South Africa is currently testing elements of the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor and wants to build 24 to 30 reactors for its own energy needs.

Hundreds of women in miniskirt protest

Hundreds of South African women demonstrated at a commuter taxi rank on Tuesday, calling for an end to harassment for wearing miniskirts. The protesters, wearing miniskirts themselves, marched to the central Johannesburg taxi rank where a young woman wearing a miniskirt was attacked and sexually assaulted last month by taxi drivers.

India beat Australia to win one-day series

India ended their tour of Australia on a high note when they beat the hosts by nine runs on Tuesday to win their best-of-three finals series 2-0. Sachin Tendulkar scored a superb 91 and paceman Praveen Kumar went on to capture four wickets as the tourists followed up Sunday’s six-wicket win in Sydney with a thrilling victory at the Gabba in Brisbane.

Apple to detail iPhone software plans

Apple is expected to give details this week of how outside programmers can create software for its iPhone, a move aimed at spurring demand for the multifunction device. Apple also said it will unveil new iPhone features aimed at businesses, potentially stepping up competition with Research in Motion’s popular Blackberry devices.

Resurgent Els in upbeat mood

World number three Ernie Els is in buoyant mood for this week’s Tampa Bay Championship at Palm Harbour after winning his first title on United States soil in nearly four years. The smooth-swinging South African shrugged off gusting winds in Sunday’s final round of the Honda Classic to seal his 16th PGA Tour victory by one shot.
