Muziwendoda Kunene, the man caught up in the hoax-email saga, had his attempted murder case postponed on Monday. Kunene appeared in the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court ion the morning for allegedly shooting his 24-year-old son, Msebenzi Kunene.

What is the voice of the media? The question was sparked by a recent complaint about a report on service delivery protests, as well as some elements of the current debate around the media. Dale McKinley, of the Anti-Privatisation Forum , wrote that a report entitled ”The travelling protesters” was ”one-sided, politically biased, factually incorrect and lazy”.

The legal challenge over the access to water between the residents of Phiri in Soweto, against the City of Johannesburg commenced in the Johannesburg High Court on Monday. Counsel for the Phiri residents, Wim Trengove, told the court that residents received the minimum of 50 litres as per government stipulations, however, a third get less than half of this.

South African Minerals and Energy Minister Buyelwa Sonjica on Monday blamed official ”negligence” for the high level of deaths in mines, on the eve of a historic strike to press for better safety. ”I think there is an element of negligence on the part of the employers which all of us need to fight,” she said.

South Africa’s rand started trading a touch firmer against the dollar early on Monday and is expected to follow overseas market activity in the absence of key domestic economic data. At 6.35am GMT, the rand traded at 6,7850 against the United States currency, up 0,29 % from Friday’s closing levels.

The Department of Health should be sued for the klebsiella outbreak by the parents of the five dead babies, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Monday. The DA spokesperson for health, Mike Waters, said the parents of the two surviving babies should also sue the department for negligence.

African National Congress (ANC) deputy president Jacob Zuma has officially accepted the nomination to run for the leadership of the ruling party. Zuma has taken the lead in the leadership race against President Thabo Mbeki, who said at the weekend he did not rule out an early parliamentary election.
