Ham thieves leave Christmas message behind

Thieves who stole 16 metric tonnes of ham and bacon from a warehouse in Australia left behind a message taunting the business just weeks before the holiday season. ”Thanks … Merry Christmas,” the crooks daubed on a wall of the Zammit Ham and Bacon Curers warehouse in suburban Sydney as they made off with their haul.

Suspension of Nationwide airlines upheld

Acting commissioner of civil aviation Gawie Bestbier has upheld the suspension of Nationwide airlines by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). ”He reviewed both parties’ statements and made an independent decision earlier today [Monday],” CAA spokesperson Phindiwe Gwebu said. She said Bestbier gave Nationwide guidelines on how to meet the CAA’s requirements.

Cosatu rejects call for Mbeki to step down early

The Congress of South Africa Trade Unions (Cosatu) on Monday rejected calls for President Thabo Mbeki to step down as president of the country in the event African National Congress deputy president Jacob Zuma is elected party head in Polokwane. Cosatu will oppose Mbeki ”stepping down before his term of office expires,” it said in a statement.

Negligence costs Health Dept millions

Negligence or malpractice at public hospitals has cost the Health Department millions of rands in damages awards over the past few years, Minister of Health Manto Tshabalala-Msimang has said. However, such cases are rare exceptions to the usually excellent care provided, she said in a written reply to a parliamentary question by Gareth Morgan of the Democratic Alliance.

New Bok coach only to be named next year

The appointment of Jake White’s successor as Springbok coach has been postponed until the president’s council meeting, which is being held on January 9. Johan Prinsloo, CEO of the South African Rugby Union, on Monday confirmed that the four candidates’ final interviews with the appointment committee will be held on January 7 and 8.
