South Africa’s rand started trading a touch firmer against the dollar early on Monday and is expected to follow overseas market activity in the absence of key domestic economic data. At 6.35am GMT, the rand traded at 6,7850 against the United States currency, up 0,29 % from Friday’s closing levels.

The Department of Health should be sued for the klebsiella outbreak by the parents of the five dead babies, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Monday. The DA spokesperson for health, Mike Waters, said the parents of the two surviving babies should also sue the department for negligence.

The manager of Thulamela Municipality, Makonde Mathivha, has been ordered to pay R50 000 to a woman who claims she was insulted about her weight by a traffic officer who ejected her from a taxi, a media report said on Monday. The woman was allegedly told she was too fat to be in a taxi, the report said.

Passport fees in Zimbabwe have been increased, Zimbabwe’s government mouthpiece Herald newspaper reported on Monday. The fees were last reviewed in May this year. According to a notice at the registrar-general’s office in Harare, an ordinary passport for an adult now costs Z-million, up from Z 000, the report said.

President Vladimir Putin appeared to be heading for a landslide victory in Russia’s parliamentary elections on Sunday night amid widespread reports that millions of citizens were coerced into voting for his party, United Russia. Early results from the Central Election Commission indicated the party was leading with 63% of votes.
