Exchanges on Monday between Najwa Petersen’s senior counsel and Najwa’s sister-in-law, Tagmieda Johnson, during cross-examination in Najwa’s bail application provided lively scenes in the Wynberg Regional Court. Najwa is in custody, awaiting trial, for the alleged murder of her entertainer husband, Taliep.

The woman known as ”the voice of the Tube” on London’s underground has been sacked after criticising the network and making spoof announcements including making fun of United States tourists, officials said on Monday. Emma Clarke has for the past eight years been famous as the voice warning travellers to ”Mind the gap”.

The Gauteng health department should sell off its 66 houses and plough the proceeds into providing better healthcare, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Monday. This comes after Gauteng health minister Brian Hlongwa revealed that his department was conducting an audit of its houses.

Manenberg police station in Cape Town is one of the best-run in the country, while those at Verena in Mpumalanga, KwaMashu in KwaZulu-Natal, and Inyibiba and Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape are among the worst. These are the findings of a Democratic Alliance study highlighting South Africa’s police stations and the service they offer.

KwaZulu-Natal’s agriculture minister, Mtholephi Mthimkulu, has ordered a forensic investigation into Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife following revelations of alleged financial irregularities and an adverse audit report. Mthimkhulu said that an amount of R22-million cannot be accounted for.

Several dozen children were hospitalised after a rampaging zebu bull escaped from an abattoir on the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar and ran amok in a nearby school ground, reports said on Monday. The bull, described as completely crazed by onlookers, fled his captors into the school, trampling everything in its path.

Denel group chief executive Shaun Liebenberg will not renew his contract when it expires on May 31 next year, the company said on Monday. Liebenberg was appointed in 2005 to manage Denel’s turnaround. While the company posted a loss of R549,1-million for the financial year ended March 31 2007, gross profit rose to R754-million.

A senior United Nations official has called on armed groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) troubled Nord Kivu region to lay down their arms and reintegrate into the regular army, a statement said on Monday. Intense fighting has been shaking eastern Nord-Kivu province near the border with Rwanda for weeks.

The African National Congress Women’s League is to finalise its nominations for the party’s leadership on Monday. Earlier, it was reported that the women’s league favoured Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma. A Port Elizabeth doctor may sue Comair after he suffered burns to his back and buttocks when hot water from a snacks trolley fell on him during turbulence, a media report said on Monday. Dr Abry Ntliziyo said he then had to sit on the wet seat for the duration of the flight.
