Govt: We have no knowledge of EU meat-ban threat

European Union agriculture experts have recommended a ban on South African ostrich meat, but the Department of Agriculture says it has no official knowledge of this threat to the R1,2-billion export industry. ”As I speak now, I don’t have any official correspondence [from the EU],” the department’s chief communications director said on Monday.

ANC NEC to meet ahead of December conference

A special meeting will be held before the African National Congress’s (ANC) 52nd annual conference in December, the party said on Monday. ”The NEC [national executive committee] agreed to hold a special meeting before the conference to further discuss issues for inclusion in the NEC’s report to conference,” ANC spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama said.

Khmer Rouge leader Khieu Samphan charged

Former Khmer Rouge leader Khieu Samphan was formally detained and charged on Monday with war crimes and crimes against humanity by Cambodia’s United Nations-backed genocide tribunal, a court spokesperson said. Imran Khan goes on hunger strike in Pakistan jail

Detained Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan went on hunger strike on Monday to protest against President Pervez Musharraf’s dismissal of judges after he imposed emergency rule, a spokesperson said. Khan planned to continue fasting until all judges sacked after the emergency was imposed on November 3 were reinstated, said his spokesperson.
