Prisoners are preparing to buy maps and plans from Department of Correctional Services officials and warders, a media report said on Friday. The maps apparently detail how the department plans to prevent escapes this festive season, including when and where warders will be on duty.

A University of Cape Town (UCT) commercial law professor was stabbed to death during a robbery in Rondebosch on Friday, Western Cape police said. Police spokesperson Captain Elliot Sinyangana said the professor was walking down Roslyn Road between 6pm and 6.30pm on Friday evening. He was then approached by two men who tried to grab his bag.

The Spar Proteas netball team suffered a painful 52-49 loss against Malawi in the play-off for fifth and sixth place at the World Championships on Saturday. After crashing out of the quarterfinals earlier this week, the Proteas side set their sights firmly on holding on to fifth place on the world rankings.

Japan’s whaling fleet is set to depart on Sunday for an annual hunt that this year for the first time will take humpback whales — a perennial favourite among whale-watchers — sparking protests from activists. Japan abandoned commercial whaling in accordance with an international moratorium in 1986, but began the next year to conduct what it calls scientific research whaling.

Finland’s Kimi Raikkonen has been confirmed the 2007 Formula One world champion after McLaren’s appeal was thrown out by a court of appeal, the sport’s world governing body, the FIA, said on Friday. The last remaining hope of Britain’s Lewis Hamilton to become world champion was crushed by this decision.

Africa requires massive investment in its failing energy sector to boost economic growth and meet its goal of halving poverty, a United States-Africa business summit heard on Friday. Emerging economies required a 16% increase in energy to drive every 10% of gross domestic product (GDP) growth, said Andrew Fawthrop, Chevron energy company’s Nigerian vice-president.

A powerful cyclone ripped through Bangladesh on Friday leaving a trail of destruction that claimed an estimated 1Â 000 lives and caused hundreds of thousands to flee the strong winds and driving rain. Cyclone Sidr crashed into the south-western coast after racing up the Bay of Bengal at 240km/h and triggered a 5m-high tidal wave.
