Poachers have shot dead three black rhinoceroses — a species listed as the most highly endangered large mammal — on a private conservancy in Zimbabwe. Owner John Travers said poachers armed with AK47 rifles on Wednesday night evaded the armed guards surrounding the rhino at the Imire game park.

Jamaican expert Fitzmore Coates testified at the inquest into the death of ex-Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer that tests showed traces of potentially deadly pesticide cypermethrin. Coates said that two weeks ago he was asked to provide an toxicology analysis of the Woolmer’s stomach contents.

Hundreds of strikers converged on Durban’s Moses Mabhida Soccer World Cup stadium on Friday as the third day of the construction workers’ strike began. Armed with sticks, umbrellas and knobkerries, the crowd began toyi-toying outside the stadium.

A suicide attack in Afghanistan this week killed 59 children and five teachers, the education ministry said Friday, taking the death toll to 75 in the deadliest attack in the insurgency-hit country. Six lawmakers and five bodyguards were also killed in the blast on Tuesday in the northern province of Baghlan.

When I was a teenager — a long time ago — the chess bug bit me. I had the sort of disposable time that only a teenager can have and used it to play chess for hours each day. An extension of my obsession was playing correspondence chess. I thought I was very sophisticated and swish because I was playing chess with someone in another country. All of this seems ludicrous today, writes Bruce Clark.

Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille plans to sue the state for R300 000 following her arrest at an anti-drugs march earlier this year, she said on Friday. A British man on Thursday failed in his record-breaking attempt to pull a 7,5-tonne red London bus over a distance of 10m, using his ears. Manjit Singh (57), a former police officer who now owns a security services company in Leicester, central England, managed to pull the Routemaster Bus over half the distance, about 5m.

South African Airways (SAA) posted a net profit before tax and restructuring charges of R136-million for the six months ended September 2007, after a period of massive losses, acting chief financial officer Clive Else said on Thursday. Revenue rose to R11-billion from R9,6-billion, reflecting a 1,2% profit margin.
