India power to easy win against Pakistan

Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh slammed solid half-centuries to guide India to an emphatic five-wicket victory over Pakistan in the first one-day international here on Monday. Skipper Dhoni top-scored with 63 and Yuvraj made 58 as India surpassed Pakistan’s total of 239-7 with 18 balls to spare.

German firm pledges R1,7bn SA investment

A German manufacturing company has invested about R284-million in South Africa’s first fabrication yard for oil and gas platforms as part of a R1,7-billion investment pledge, government news agency BuaNews reported on Monday. MAN Ferrostaal has opened the fabrication yard for oil and gas platforms at Saldanha Bay near Cape Town.

Flooded Vietnam fears approaching typhoon

Floods have killed at least 46 people in central Vietnam in the past 10 days, and a typhoon making its way across the South China Sea is forecast to dump more rain this week, reports said on Monday. The region, which includes the Central Highlands coffee belt, has been hit hard by storms and floods since early October.

Large blasts target Ethiopian troop convoy

Two large blasts aimed at a convoy of Ethiopian troops heading toward the capital prompted soldiers to open fire on Monday. At least two Somalis were shot to death, witnesses said. The explosions south of Mogadishu could be heard a kilometre away, and ”shook all the buildings nearby”, resident Mohamed Ahmed said.

US space shuttle leaves space station

The United States space shuttle Discovery successfully undocked from the International Space Station (ISS) early on Monday to begin a journey back to Earth, space officials said. After saying goodbye and closing the hatches, Discovery crew members smoothly sailed away from the ISS at 10.30am GMT.
