Fire damages theatres at Jo’burg hospital

Fire damaged five operating theatres at Coronation Hospital in Newclare, Johannesburg, on Monday, causing several patients to be moved to nearby hospitals, the provincial department of health said. Patients who require emergency medical operations were moved to Johannesburg and Chris Hani-Baragwanath hospitals.

British warship to visit Cape Town

A British warship, the HMS Southampton, is expected to arrive in Cape Town on Monday for a visit on the final part of an eight-month deployment from the United Kingdom. The ship has operated around the Pacific, South America and the South Atlantic as the UK’s ”on call” warship in the area.

Britons now send more than one billion SMSs a week — as many as were sent in the whole of 1999, figures out on Monday showed. People in Britain sent 4 825-billion SMSs during September 2007, an increase of 25% on September last year, according to the Mobile Data Association.

Yousuf and Butt prop up Pakistan

Mohammad Yousuf and Salman Butt hit half-centuries to help Pakistan reach a competitive 239-7 in the opening one-day international against India on Monday. Middle-order batsman Yousuf, dropped on 10, top-scored with an unbeaten 83 while left-handed opener Butt hit a brisk 50 in his comeback match.

Egypt ruling party gives secretary general new term

Egypt’s ruling party gave ageing politician Safwat el-Sherif another term as party secretary general on Monday, ending speculation that President Hosni Mubarak’s son Gamal might take that position. Sherif (73) has been near the top of the National Democratic Party (NDP) since its foundation in 1977 and has been secretary general since 2002.
