Mvela to buy up to 30% of Johncom media

South African investment firm Mvelaphanda has reached agreement with fund management group Allan Gray to buy up to 30% of Johnnic Communications’ media unit, it said on Tuesday. Mvelaphanda said it will buy a minumum of 25,1% and a maximum of 30% of Johncom’s media business, provisionally named Opco.

Manuel: Economy shows signs of strain

Finance Minister Trevor Manuel said at the launch of the latest Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement on Tuesday that while the past four years have been good for the South African economy, it has begun to show signs of strain. He noted that these signs of strain are reflected in rising inflation and a high current-account deficit.

Iraqi fisherman nets shark 200km from sea

A 2m shark has been caught in a river in southern Iraq more than 200km from the sea. Karim Hasan Thamir said he was fishing with his sons last week when they spotted a large fish thrashing about in his net. ”I recognised the fish as a shark because I have seen one on a television programme,” he told Reuters.

Dube murder case postponed

The four men accused of the murder of reggae star Lucky Dube had their case postponed in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. The case has been postponed until November 30. The men, Sifiso Mlanga, Julius Gxowa, Thabo Mafoping and Mbofi Mabe, face charges of murder, attempted hijacking and the possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Els still on a high after match-play win

Ernie Els is still on a high after rejuvenating his stalled career by winning the World Match-Play Championship this month, and he now wants revenge over Adam Scott in Singapore. The big South African put inconsistent form behind him to grab the £1-million winner’s cheque at Wentworth and it has fired him up for the Singapore Open.

JSE a tad higher ahead of Fed verdict

The JSE rose modestly at noon on Tuesday as investors became more optimistic that the United States Federal Reserve would cut interest rates, which would bolster Wall Street. Investors cheered the news that Tokyo Sexwale’s Mevelaphanda group plans to buy up to 30% of Johncom’s to-be-formed Opco.
