Soweto residents left their houses to cheer on the Springbok rugby team on its victory parade through the Johannesburg township on Saturday morning. A handful of cheering residents, some still in their night-gowns, braved the rain to greet the Rugby World Cup winners as they passed the Maponya Mall in an open-top bus.

Juande Ramos on Friday night resigned as manager of Sevilla, the Spanish team said, clearing the way for the award-winning Spaniard to join Tottenham. Sevilla said that Ramos had unilaterally rescinded his contract, presenting documents to this effect to senior team officials at the Sevilla stadium. The club referred to Ramos as ”the now former coach of Sevilla”.

United States biochemist Arthur Kornberg, who won a Nobel Prize for shedding light on the construction of human DNA, died on October 26 at the age of 89, Stanford University said. "Dr Kornberg was one of the most distinguished and remarkable scientists in American medicine," the head of the California university’s medical school, Philip Pizzo, said in a statement.

World champions South Africa will be almost at full strength for next month’s Test match against Wales in Cardiff, the Welsh Rugby Union said on Friday. Springbok captain John Smit will lead South Africa, who won the World Cup last Saturday when they beat England in the final in Paris, in the Test at the Millennium Stadium on November 24.

Torrential overnight rain killed 30 people and left a hundred injured in Kinshasa, according to a new toll from the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs. Many homes also collapsed in the flash floods caused by the heavy rain on Thursday night and Friday morning.

Led Zeppelin fans resorted to desperate measures on Friday to win a pair of tickets to see the legendary band’s one-off reunion concert in London next month. The three surviving members of the hard-rocking British group, which disbanded in 1980, are to play together for the first time in 19 years at the O2 Arena on November 26.

World oil prices surged to historic highs on Friday, breaching $92 for the first time in New York amid rising tension in crude-rich Iran and tightening United States energy supplies. New York’s main futures contract, light sweet crude for delivery in December, soared to a record intraday high of $92,22 per barrel.
