The use of consultants cost the Department of Labour over R23-million in the last financial year, the department said on Thursday. According to the department’s own documentation, it spent R23 601 014,40 on nine different contracted experts, including auditors and trainers, during the last financial year.

A blast tore through a security-forces vehicle in restive north-west Pakistan on Thursday, killing 30 people and wounding dozens more, officials said. The attack in scenic Swat Valley in the North West Frontier Province was the latest in a wave of violence targeting the military since government troops stormed the al-Qaeda-linked Red Mosque in Islamabad in July.

Malawi’s anti-corruption agency has arrested the head of the country’s electricity-generating company over allegations of graft, officials said on Thursday. A spokesperson for the Anti-Corruption Bureau said Kandi Padambo was arrested late on Wednesday in the commercial capital, Blantyre.

The sixth teenager accused of the murder of King Edward VII school pupil Mfundo Ntshangase was denied bail in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. Bail was denied because the state said there were not enough grounds to grant him bail. He had been in custody since his arrest in September.

Zimbabwe’s home affairs minister has dismissed as hearsay claims by the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) that MDC members are being targeted in violent attacks by ruling party supporters, state media said on Thursday. A delegation from the MDC was on Wednesday summoned to meet Home Affairs Minister Kembo Mohadi.
