UN on climate: It’s now or never to save the planet

Humanity is changing Earth’s climate so fast and devouring resources so voraciously that it is poised to bequeath a ravaged planet to future generations, the United Nations warned on Thursday in its most comprehensive survey of the environment. The fourth <i>Global Environment Outlook</i> is compiled by 390 experts from observations, studies and data garnered over two decades.

Thirty dead in Pakistan blast

A blast tore through a security-forces vehicle in restive north-west Pakistan on Thursday, killing 30 people and wounding dozens more, officials said. The attack in scenic Swat Valley in the North West Frontier Province was the latest in a wave of violence targeting the military since government troops stormed the al-Qaeda-linked Red Mosque in Islamabad in July.

Schoolboy stabbing: Case postponed

The sixth teenager accused of the murder of King Edward VII school pupil Mfundo Ntshangase was denied bail in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. Bail was denied because the state said there were not enough grounds to grant him bail. He had been in custody since his arrest in September.

Cheetahs set for forward tussle

With five forwards and only two backs on the bench, it does not take a rocket scientist to predict that the Cheetahs will play it mostly tight in Saturday’s Absa Currie Cup final against the Lions in Bloemfontein. And the Lions are aware of it. ”They will probably try and make a statement with their forwards, but we’ll just play our own game,” said Lions coach Eugene Eloff.
