Members of the Evaton community attacked police after a three-year-old boy was killed by a drunk driver, Gauteng police said on Monday. The mob wanted police to hand the driver over to them, spokesperson Captain William Velaphi Mcera said. The incident took place on Bengu Road in Evaton on Sunday afternoon.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) army said on Monday it had resumed control of an eastern town seized by rebel forces over the weekend and the heavy fighting between the two sides had ended. Forces loyal to renegade general Laurent Nkunda confirmed the clashes in the eastern Nord-Kivu region were over, and said they were waiting to hear about possible talks.

The Mozambican national railways company continues to lose steel from its lines. Radio Mozambique reported on Monday that the Xai Xai-to-Manjacaze railway line had been stripped of railway line steel and safety clips worth more than -million since the beginning of the year.

The conduct of certain people attending the funeral of former South African ambassador to Indonesia Norman Mashabane was ”despicable”, said the African National Congress (ANC) on Monday. The funeral took place in Phalaborwa on Saturday. ”We deplore the behaviour of these unruly elements. There is no room for such people in the ANC,” the party said.

The JSE retained its weak tone at noon on Monday, in line with overseas markets amid renewed concerns about the health of the United States economy. At 11.56am, the all-share index was off 1,51%. Resources fell 2,48%, while the gold-mining and platinum-mining indices gave up 1% and 3,47% respectively.

A fire erupted at a shoe factory in south-east China, killing 37 people in the latest industrial accident to hit the world’s fourth-largest economy, officials and state media said on Monday. The blaze at the Feida workshop, located near the city of Putian in coastal Fujian province, broke out at 9.50pm local time on Sunday and was extinguished an hour later.

A postcard mailed by a Japanese soldier from a World War II battlefield in Burma reached his friend 64 years after it was sent, thanks to a Japanese exchange student and the family of a former United States soldier who kept the card. The card travelled from Burma, Nagasaki, Arizona and Hawaii before finding Shizuo Nagano (80).
