SA firm looks to invest in Zim diamonds

A South African mining company is set to invest more than -million in diamond-mining projects in Zimbabwe over the next three years, it was reported on Friday. The investment will be carried out through Better Mining, the local subsidiary of African Pearl Mining, the official Herald newspaper said.

IFP welcomes decision to send Shaik back to prison

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) on Friday welcomed Correctional Services Minister Ngconde Balfour’s order for Durban fraud convict Schabir Shaik to be removed from St Augustine’s Hospital and sent to Westville Prison. ”We welcome the news that Schabir Shaik is back behind bars, thus immediately ending his luxury hotel-like stay in hospital,” said IFP spokesperson Sybil Seaton.

Mbeki’s office informed of E Guinea coup, says witness

The office of President Thabo Mbeki was regularly informed about the progress of an alleged attempted coup in Equatorial Guinea, the Pretoria Regional Court heard on Monday. State witness Sean Abdinor, who arranged aviation logistics for the coup, told the court he was informed of this by alleged coup planner Simon Mann and his personal assistant, James Kershaw.

Leon queries Mbeki crime figures

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Tony Leon has asked why the murder-conviction rate is so low if over 80% of murder victims in South Africa are killed by people they know. In his weekly newsletter published on Friday, Leon questioned what he called ”a dizzying series of statistics” contained in President Thabo Mbeki’s response on Thursday to the State of the Nation debate.

Mbeki calls for end to Palestinian sanctions

President Thabo Mbeki on Friday called for an end to all measures intended to isolate the Palestinian Authority and for the parties involved to renew their peace efforts. Writing in his weekly newsletter, Mbeki congratulated Saudi Arabian King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas leader Khalid Mish’al for concluding last week’s Mecca agreement.

UK university offers ‘degree in death’

A British university has become the first in the country to offer a degree for funeral directors, it said on Friday. The course at Bath University, in south-west England, will cover everything from bereavement counselling to the disposal of remains. Organisers say it is necessary because traditional funerals are dying out in Britain.

Four finance youth ministers will be in Parliament as guests of Finance Minister Trevor Manuel when he delivers his budget speech on Wednesday. They will attend a pre-budget function and will meet Manuel and Minster in the Presidency Essop Pahad, Johan Reiners of the South African Youth Ministers’ Programme said on Friday.

E Guinea pledges fair trial for alleged coup plotter

A top official from Equatorial Guinea has assured a court in Zimbabwe that alleged British mercenary Simon Mann will receive a fair trial if he is extradited to the oil-rich Central African country, reports said Friday. Jose Olo Obono, Equatorial Guinea’s Attorney General, said his country would not impose the death penalty, reported the Herald newspaper.

Third suspect arrested for Rattray murder

KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested a third person for the murder of historian David Rattray. The man was arrested on Thursday night, said Senior Superintendent Phindile Radebe. On February 5, Fethe Nkwanyana (23) was sentenced to 25 years in jail by Judge Jan Hugo in the Pietermaritzburg High Court after pleading guilty to the crime.
