Public Enterprises Minister Alec Erwin has appointed six new members to the South African Airways (SAA) board, a spokesperson said on Monday. The new members were Francine-Ann du Plessis, Jeurgen Schrempp, Nkosana Moyo, Koosum Kalyan, Billy Modise and Margie Whitehouse.

A plane from Angolan state airline TAAG made an emergency landing on Monday in Lisbon just 15 minutes after taking off from the Portuguese capital due to technical problems, officials said. The Boeing 747, which was bound for the Angolan capital Luanda, landed safely at Portela airport, Portugal’s busiest, just before 7am (6am GMT).

A weaker rand in recent months and price increases in raw material has put pressure on the South African tyre industry, Continental Tyre’s senior official said on Tuesday. Natural rubber increased by 86% from June 2005 to the present and this has translated into a 15-16% increase in the price of producing a tyre.

England has conveyed to Pakistan it wants the International Cricket Council to intervene in a compensation dispute arising from the forfeited Oval Test after the two countries failed to reach an agreement. ”The England and Wales Cricket Board in their latest letter, have informed us they are going to the ICC,” said Pakistan Cricket Board director of operations Saleem Altaf.

Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney has brushed off suggestions his recent dip in form is down to post-World Cup trauma, and believes a red card he received in Amsterdam is more to blame. Rooney’s relative lack of spark, and goals, this term has led many observers to comment that he may have been rushed back too quickly from injury to play in the World Cup.

Former petroleum geologist Cynthia Carroll has been appointed new chief executive officer of mining giant Anglo American, the company announced on Tuesday. It said Carroll, currently CEO of Alcan Primary Metal Group, would join the Anglo American board in mid-January next year.

A Mpumalanga man is being hailed as a ”Crocodile Dundee” after surviving a four-hour battle with a huge crocodile at the weekend, media reports said on Tuesday. Alex Masinga (58) of KaMhlushwa in Nkomazi said he first defended himself against the 2,7m female by wrestling with it.

Large Chinese banks ignored the ”Equator Principles”, a voluntary code of conduct under which projects financed by private banks meet social and environmental standards
