Kenyan football officials claim Fifa prejudice

Kenyan football officials on Thursday accused Fifa of applying double standards in its condemnation of the country as they braced for another suspension for the second time in as many years. Fifa’s executive committee proposed on Wednesday that Kenya be suspended for failing to respect agreements to resolve recurrent problems in the country’s football association.

SA faces challenge in housing delivery

Housing delivery in South Africa needs to double from the current delivery rate of about 250 000 housing units a year to 500 000 units if the backlog is to be removed and supply to new urban residents to be fulfilled, Director General of Land and Housing Irumuleng Kotsoane said on Thursday.

Bush acknowledges Iraq-Vietnam war comparison

United States President George Bush on Wednesday for the first time acknowledged a possible parallel between the raging violence in Iraq and the Vietnam war. Bush was asked in an ABC News interview if he agreed with a New York Times columnist’s comparison of the strife in Iraq with the Tet offensive, which is considered a key turning point in the US war in Vietnam.

Blair: Troops may quit Iraq in 10 to 16 months

British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Wednesday shifted ground on the continuing presence of British troops in Iraq by saying it was government policy to leave the country within 10 to 16 months — so long as the security situation allowed. Blair’s comments appear to be an attempt to pacify the restive mood of the British army.

Disciplined Titans down Warriors

Some tight bowling and magnificent fielding by the Titans prevented the Warriors from winning their first limited-overs match of the MTN domestic championship at Buffalo Park on Wednesday. Wife of former radio personality dies in fire

The wife of a former radio personality died of smoke inhalation in a veld fire which got out of control on Tuesday. Madelein Engelbrecht (41) the wife of the former managing director of Jacaranda FM, Willem Engelbrecht, was fighting a veld fire with other farmers near Dewagendrift, east of Pretoria, when she was she was overcome by the smoke.

Mozambique’s president hails Machel

Mozambican President Armando Guebuza on Thursday marked the 20th anniversary of independence hero Samora Machel’s death in a mystery plane crash, hailing him as an ”African hero”. Guebuza and South African President Thabo Mbeki will later on Thursday jointly pay homage to Machel at the site of the plane crash in South Africa.

One of rugby’s premier flyhalves, Stephen Larkham, says he may have a run at inside-centre on the Wallabies’ tour of Europe next month. As assistant coach Scott Johnson attempts to reshape the backline, Larkham has been training at inside-centre, with regular number 12 Matt Giteau at scrumhalf and winger Mark Gerrard at flyhalf.

Obasanjo declares state of emergency in south-west

Nigeria’s President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday declared a state of emergency in the troubled Ekiti State in the country’s south-west. The governor of the state, Ayo Fayose, and his deputy, Biodun Olujimi, were impeached on Monday by the state’s Parliament on graft charges and the speaker of Parliament, Friday Aderemi, was sworn in by the state’s acting chief judge as acting governor.
