Cold winter gives rise to hypothermia warnings

The coldest month of the year is in full swing, and the City of Johannesburg says homeless people should beware of the creeping killer, hypothermia. People are being encouraged to wear as much clothing as possible. ”We are also advising people to pack cardboard and newspapers in their clothes and shoes to keep the heat in,” said emergency services spokesperson Malcolm Midgley.

Bayern confirm interest in Ruud

German champions Bayern Munich on Monday confirmed they want to sign Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy. Dutch star Van Nistelrooy (30) looks certain to leave Old Trafford this summer after falling out with United manager Sir Alex Ferguson at the end of last season.

Beslan mastermind was plotting new attack

Russia’s security service announced the death of Shamil Basayev on Monday, the country’s ”terrorist number one” and the man who was the self-confessed mastermind of the Beslan massacre. The 41-year-old, who lost a foot during the second Chechen war in 2000, frequently appeared in internet broadcasts and statements to haunt the Kremlin.

Pietersen wants bowlers to step up against Pakistan

Kevin Pietersen has told England’s novice bowlers to ”stand up and be counted” as the team prepares for its Test series against Pakistan. Datatec, ALT form R800m new BEE company

South African IT group Datatec announced on Tuesday that its South African operations will merge with African Legend Technologies (ALT) to form an R800-million-a-year IT company. Datatec will have a 55% shareholding and African Legend Technologies will hold the remaining 45% in the newly merged entity.
