The Pretoria High Court on Monday gave the go-ahead for the election to take place in Khutsong. The court turned down an application by a group calling itself the Merafong community to have the election postponed pending an application to contest the constitutionality of the municipality’s redemarcation.

The Democratic Alliance has renewed its call on President Thabo Mbeki to appoint a judicial commission of inquiry into certain aspects of the arms deal. The party has written to Mbeki ”in an attempt to jog his memory” of an alleged meeting he had with French arms company Thomson-CSF senior executives when he was deputy president.

The price of bread rose by more than 30% as stores in Zimbabwe opened for business on Monday, the latest blow to consumers in the country’s teetering economy. A regular loaf went up to Z 000 (about R3,68), from the government-controlled price of Z 000 (about R2,70).

There is a quirky new drama coming to American television next month. It is called Big Love, and HBO will air it in a plum weekly slot, just after The Sopranos. Like The Sopranos, Big Love is a tale of marital strife in a dysfunctional family, only in this case the central character is not a Mafioso but a regular guy from Utah who happens to have three wives — hence the wry title.

Armed with wellington boots, President Thabo Mbeki on Monday experienced life in a rain-soaked informal settlement: mud, water and a leaky roof. Mbeki was campaigning in Rustenburg, ward 13 — normally known as Ramochana, not far from the local prison. Engaging residents in the vernacular, Mbeki asked after their concerns.

Dutch banks said on Monday they are to take urgent measures to end a spate of thefts from automatic telling machines (ATMs) by criminals blowing them up with gas. The ATMs are to be protected by the relatively simple measure of adding a ventilation grill to money machines thought likely to be targets.

The Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas warned Hamas on Sunday night that he will resign if the group makes it impossible for him to carry out his duties as president. Abbas has stated that he wants peace negotiations with Israel to establish a Palestinian state and that Hamas will have to abide by these rules if it forms a government.
