Museveni takes early lead in Uganda polls

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni holds a solid lead over opposition challenger Kizza Besigye in the country’s landmark elections, the first official results showed on Friday. Meanwhile, deadly raids by Ugandan Lord’s Resistance Army rebels have forced scores of villagers in southern Sudan to flee their homes.

SA Rugby turns loss into R6,4m profit

SA Rugby turned a R12,8-million loss incurred by the end of 2004 into a R6,4-million net profit in the past financial year. The figures were contained in the company’s audited annual financial statements, adopted at Friday’s annual general council meeting at the Newlands rugby stadium.

Mozambican quake toll rises to four

Four people died in the powerful earthquake on Thursday that forced thousands of panicked residents from their homes, Mozambique’s government and state radio reported on Friday. The United States Geological Survey said the quake struck on Thursday at 12.19am local time with a magnitude of 7,5.

Petrol price to drop by 11 cents per litre

The petrol price is to decrease by 11 cents per litre next Wednesday, the Department of Minerals and Energy announced on Friday. The new retail price of petrol of R5,52 per litre inland means the retail petrol price will have declined by 8,5% since it peaked at a record R6,03 cents per litre in October 2005.

Hurricanes outpace Cats in Wellington

The Wellington Hurricanes ran in four tries to one in a 29-16 win over gritty South African side the Cats in their Super 14 rugby clash in Wellington on Friday. The Cats defence disrupted the free-flowing Hurricanes backline in a match peppered with errors. Two touchdowns ensured a flattering scoreline for the home side.

Injury-hit England not seeking replacements

England will not be asking for immediate reinforcements ahead of next week’s Test series against India despite the 16-man touring squad being wrecked with injuries and illness. Captain Michael Vaughan was given a cortisone injection to speed up the recovery of a recurring knee injury in time for the first of three back-to-back Tests starting in Nagpur on March 1.
