Squabbling Americans squander Olympic gold

United States speedskaters Chad Hedrick and Shani Davis have revealed the full enmity of their bitter feud, a rivalry that helped cost them Olympic 1 500m gold. Italy’s Enrico Fabris won in one minute, 45,97 seconds on Tuesday, beating 1 000m Olympic champion Davis by ,16 of a second with 1 500m world record-holder Hedrick third in 1.46,22.

The hunt for Ratko Mladic

A highly sensitive operation appeared to be under way on Tuesday night to secure the surrender and transfer to The Hague of General Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serbian war commander who is Europe’s most wanted war crimes suspect. A flurry of confusing and contradictory reports left it unclear as to the whereabouts and condition of the 63-year-old, wanted on charges of genocide by the international war crimes tribunal.

Charlize Theron to present an Oscar

South African Oscar-winner Charlize Theron will return to the Academy Awards stage next month to present one of the coveted golden Oscar statuettes, organisers announced on Tuesday. The ice-blond beauty (30) who won the best actress statuette for 2003’s Monster, in which she played a serial killer, is nominated again this year for her leading role as a female miner in North Country.

Hamas: We won’t bow to threats

Hamas has accused the United States and Israel of refusing to accept the result of a democratic election, following a report that the two countries were discussing means to de- stabilise and bring down a Hamas-led Palestinian administration. An article in The New York Times reported that Washington and Israel intended to block funding for the Palestinian Authority.

Opposition want action on Koeberg problems

Opposition parties have questioned the circumstances surrounding the Western Cape’s power outages resulting from the Koeberg nuclear power station’s ongoing problems. Democratic Alliance Cape Town mayoral candidate Helen Zille said on Tuesday reports of undisclosed problems at Koeberg over the weekend were liable to create serious concern among the public.
