Chiefs too strong for Wits

The much-publicised decision to play a home Premier Soccer League game against Kaizer Chiefs at the compact Bidvest Stadium before a tickets-only 5 000 crowd on Sunday afternoon proved a success for Wits University — the only problem was losing 1-0 in the process.

Brazilians down Pirates to top PSL log

While not displaying the sublime form that accounted for the other Soweto glamour club, Kaizer Chiefs, 10 days ago, defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns moved to the top of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) log with a 2-1 win over Orlando Pirates at a vibrant Loftus on Wednesday night.

Pirates, Downs ready to square up

It was very much a case of being ”in the zone” when the Premier Soccer League (PSL) held a media conference on Monday to boost the feature game between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates at Loftus on Wednesday night. PSL CEO Trevor Phillips announced that seating at the Pretoria stadium will be divided into newly allocated zones.

Pirates capitalise on SuperSport bungle

A 22nd-minute goal of some considerable ingenuity gave Orlando Pirates a morale-boosting, if dour, 1-0 Premier Soccer League victory at Loftus on Sunday afternoon — although it was a winner that emerged as the product of a calamitous goalkeeping blunder by SuperSport United goalkeeper Dennis Onyongo.

So close, but no Leopards victory

Leading 1-0 in the 85th minute with their opponents seemingly dead and buried under the strain of a 40-degree-Celsius Premier Soccer League scorcher, Black Leopards still went down 2-1 to Jomo Cosmos at Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It was a familiar story of costly lapses in the Leopards defence.

Committee clears World Cup finance hurdle

The local organising committee has cleared its first hurdle in the race to have amenities in place for the Soccer World Cup by balancing a stadium budget R3,4-billion over the original R8,7-billion. This was done by trimming costs and obtaining additional finance from the municipalities where games would be played.

Great Soweto rivals Moroka Swallows and Orlando Pirates have been paired together for the first round of South Africa’s Absa Cup soccer competition. One official called it ”the million to one shot”. The draw on Monday evening uncannily paired a good number of teams from the Premier League against each other.

Baloyi wins fifth world title

Cassius ”The Hitman” Baloyi made South African boxing history by securing a fifth world title while demolishing Argentina’s Nazareno Ruiz in three rounds for the vacant IBO junior lightweight crown at a glittering Emperors Palace on Saturday night.
