Zimbabweans feel South African President Thabo Mbeki has betrayed them, compromised his efforts to lead the search for a solution to their political crisis and openly sided with their dictatorial president. Mbeki said this week that Zimbabwe had complied with all the regional protocols meant to ensure fairness in its parliamentary elections.

The International Bar Association has accused Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe of conducting a reign of terror and said he should not be allowed to elude international justice. In neighbouring countries, human rights groups protested the Zimbabwe Parliament’s approval of legislation seeking to curb the activities of NGOs there.
Zimbabwe’s government continues to step up its crackdown on dissent, using new repressive laws and state-sponsored violence to create a pervasive atmosphere of terror, critics said on Wednesday. Archbishop Pius Ncube, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Bulawayo in Zimbabwe’s western Matabeleland, told a news conference that the new repressive laws show ”Mugabe’s regime has made sure they can beat anyone into submission”.
