Police on Friday said that the man who escaped from the high-security C-Max prison in Pretoria on the weekend has ”the luck of the devil”. ”He must be the devil’s child himself because we get new leads every day but he has not yet been arrested,” said investigating officer Arnold Boonstra. ”He seems to have the luck of the devil.”

African leaders must ensure that countries dealing with conflict resolution do not slip back into conflict, President Thabo Mbeki said on Tuesday. ”In many instances, as we deal with matters of peace and stability on the continent, we don’t go all the way in ensuring that countries in conflict don’t revert back to conflict,” Mbeki said.

South Africa would be able to safeguard every person coming to the 2010 Soccer World Cup, the chief executive of the local organising committee, Danny Jordaan, said in Johannesburg on Wednesday. ”We will safeguard places where the players will stay, the routes, hotels, etc. The country has demonstrated its ability to manage other World Cups with no incidents of crime,” he said.
The case of a 28-year-old man accused of murdering a Taiwanese businessman and his family before burying them was postponed in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Bao Xin Long, a Chinese national, is due to appear in court again on August 31.
The African National Congress announced its candidates for mayor in the 13 municipalities it controls in Gauteng on Tuesday. There will be new mayors for Tshwane, the West Rand, Metsweding, Mogale City, Emfuleni, Kungwini and Nokeng tsa Taemane municipalities. ”Changing a mayor is not a statement on a specific individual,” the ANC said.

Construction at the Johannesburg International airport to accommodate the A380 Airbus will be completed by the end of 2008, the Airports Company South Africa said on Wednesday. Chief airports planner Erik Kriel said the massive rehabilitation project, to cost about R10-billion over the next few years, has already begun.

An announcement to take the National Council of Provinces’ decision to do away with cross-border municipalities possibly to the Constitutional Court was well received by Khutsong residents at a public meeting on Monday. Sabelo Ngwane of the SA Communist Party’s Young Communist League announced the decision when he addressed hundreds of Khutsong residents at a local stadium.

A ”plan for life” could help save the life of a teenager with suicidal thoughts or tendencies, says Roshni Parbhoo of the SA Depression and Anxiety Group. Parbhoo told the South African Press Association that teenage suicide is becoming more common in South Africa especially at this time of the year.

He addressed mayors from the district as well as ward-committee members.
