Zim extends deadline for old currency

Zimbabwe’s central bank chief announced on Monday that he was extending a deadline for consumers to exchange their Z 000 bills, just hours before they were to cease being legal tender. The legal status of the Z 000 bearer cheque notes is ”now reinstated”, Reserve Bank Governor Gideon Gono announced at a news conference.

Sudan pardons opponents accused of plot ‘to sabotage’

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Monday pardoned 30 opposition members accused of plotting against the state and ordered their immediate release. ”I have decided to pardon the accused of their attempt at sabotage and I have ordered their immediate release,” Bashir told a large crowd gathered in Khartoum to mark the country’s 52nd anniversary of independence.

Dozens killed in Kenya post-election violence

An eruption of fresh violence triggered by Kenya’s disputed presidential ballot left more than 100 dead on Monday, after defeated opposition candidate Raila Odinga rejected Mwai Kibaki’s re-election. Further clashes were feared as Odinga planned to hold his own alternative inauguration at a mass rally later on Monday.

UK airport strike talks to resume

Union leaders are to hold new talks with the British Airports Authority (BAA) on Monday in an attempt to avert a series of strikes that could cause widespread travel chaos in January. A BAA spokesperson said the talks will take place at an undisclosed location after negotiations last week failed to solve the dispute over pensions.

Pakistan to delay vote, say officials

Pakistan’s elections will be delayed by at least four weeks due to mass unrest after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, a Cabinet official said on Monday. Other government and election officials confirmed that the January 8 polls would be postponed. Bhutto’s party rejected any delay.

SA call up McKenzie after Windies defeat

Search for missing aircraft continues

Rescue services were on Monday still searching for the missing Cessna 210 light aircraft, six days after it disappeared in the Baviaanskloof area of the Eastern Cape, authorities said. ”There is still no success but we are following up new leads and will continue searching again today [Monday],” said South African Search and Rescue Organisation head Charles Norval.
