South Africa’s prosecuting chief on Sunday denied claims that President Thabo Mbeki was behind the filing of a string of charges against Jacob Zuma, the new leader of the African National Congress. Mokeketedi Mpshe, acting National Prosecuting Authority head, told a newspaper that the decision to formally charge Zuma was made independently.

Al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden warned Sunni Muslims in Iraq not to take up arms against the terror network and promised the "liberation of Palestine" in a new online message. In the 56-minute tape released late on Saturday, the Western world’s most wanted man also accused the United States of seeking to control the region through the Iraqi government.

A legislator in Zimbabwe’s ruling party has fled to Britain, fearing arrest in a police probe of foreign-currency payments he made last month, official media reported on Sunday. The state-owned Sunday Mail quoted unnamed sources as saying police wanted to interview David Butau, the Zanu-PF MP for a northern constituency.

Security forces were on alert on Sunday in the Sunni regions of Iraq where Saddam Hussein drew his most fervent support, as loyalists of the ousted dictator marked the first anniversary of his execution. Police and troops were patrolling the village of Awja, Saddam’s birthplace and where he now lies buried.

Eighty people were arrested for drunken driving and other criminal offences at a roadblock in East London, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday. Superintendent Mtati Tana said the arrests were made in a joint operation between police and traffic officers as part of the festive season crackdown on serious crimes and drunken driving.

Australian skipper Ricky Ponting says leg-spinner Brad Hogg will be a better and more confident bowler in Wednesday’s second cricket Test against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Phil O’Donnell, captain of Scottish Premier League club Motherwell, died on Saturday after collapsing during a match. The 35-year-old midfielder fell to the ground at Fir Park just as he was about to be substituted against Dundee United. The player was carried from the field on a stretcher and taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to take part in a giant New Year’s kiss in front of St Mark’s Basilica in the romantic Italian city of Venice, authorities said this week. "New Year 2008 in Venice will become the New Year of love," the Venice municipality said on its website.
