Tornadoes shatter southern US states

The death toll from a series of tornadoes that swept the southern United States was rising on Wednesday night while rescuers continued to sift the rubble of flattened buildings. At least 54 people were killed and hundreds more injured, many critically, as the deadliest twisters for more than 20 years struck before dawn.

BHP Billiton bid for Rio Tinto fails again

BHP Billiton, the world’s biggest mining company, sweetened its takeover bid for rival Rio Tinto on Wednesday to ,4-billion, but its proposal was again rebuffed. Amid reports that Rio Tinto could become the centre of a bidding battle, the company’s management rejected the BHP offer as ”not being in the best interests of shareholders”.

De Beers spends $100m a year on exploration

Diamond giant De Beers spends $100-million a year on exploration activities in the regions where the company expects to have the most impact, and has invested more than this in the past few years to establish a greater presence and activity rate in Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo, its group MD said on Wednesday.

Shutdowns, Geita hit AngloGold earnings

AngloGold Ashanti reported a headline loss of 1 099 United States cents per share in the fourth quarter on Thursday, after safety related shutdowns and ongoing problems at its Geita mine cut production. The world’s third biggest gold producer said production in the quarter to end December fell 5% to 1,37-million ounces.

It’s the country, stupid

We are past hoping for big moments from President Thabo Mbeki; we have watched him let too many slip by. And this year he suffers from the additional handicap in that, whatever he chooses to say in his state of the nation address on Friday, he will be watching his back. The party he no longer controls, and which wants to control him, will be listening intently.
