Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez bolstered his cooperation with Cuba on Saturday by signing energy, farming and finance accords, including a deal to expand of one of his socialist ally’s oil refineries. The Venezuelan leader is Havana’s closest ally and the petroleum deals have helped Cuba’s economy stay afloat.

Left-handed Cook made 118 as England groped to 251-6 in their second innings when a heavy downpour ruined Sri Lanka’s hopes of victory.

Durban paddler Darryl Bartho snatched victory in the gruelling 56km Men’s Health Cape Point Challenge surf-ski marathon, ending a title drought during which he has regularly been the runner-up in many major events. A delighted Bartho ran up the beach at Fish Hoek to claim the title.

An elderly Vryheid woman who was savaged by a hyena on Thursday has undergone plastic surgery at Johannesburg’s Milpark Hospital. Alie Nel (83) was in a ”very stable condition” in the hospital’s trauma intensive-care unit on Saturday, said its marketing manager, Amelda Swartz.
