A new group chief executive officer has been appointed at Alexander Forbes after the resignation of Peter Moyo, the company said on Tuesday. Bruce Campbell — previously chairperson of the company — has been appointed as group CEO. Moyo apparently left the company because of differences with the board.

A seven-year old boy, who was beheaded in an alleged muti transaction, also had his testicles removed, the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court heard on Tuesday. This emerged at the first appearance of Lizwi Gwiqisa, Bandile Msiki and building contractor Petros Gwosebenn, who are charged with murder and contravening the Human Tissue Act.

Low-cost airline kulula.com said on Tuesday it would know ”in time” what caused the oil-pressure warning which led to a flight to Cape Town turning back to Johannesburg. ”We are quite encouraged by the level of focus on safety issues in terms of domestic flights. It’s a good thing,” said Gidon Novick, joint CEO of Comair.

Hamas has rounded up scores of Fatah activists in the Gaza Strip following a rally that drew more than 200 000 supporters and ended in gunfire that killed seven people. The assembly on Monday, marking the third anniversary of the death of iconic Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, was the biggest held by President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah group in Gaza.

In a nine-country survey released on Tuesday, more than 40% of respondents did not understand that HIV/Aids is always fatal. While most respondents believed that The survey from the MAC Aids Fund involved 4Â 510 interviews conducted in the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, France, China, India, Mexico, Brazil and South Africa.

There is a personnel shortage of more than 50% at the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Helen Joseph Hospital, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Tuesday. ”The Gauteng Health Department claims that the ICU ‘works optimally’, but I don’t see how this can be the case with a 54% vacancy rate,” said Bloom.

An alleged robber was shot and killed and a man was in a serious condition after shots were fired during a robbery in Rosebank on Tuesday. Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman said the shooting happened at about 12.30pm near the corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Bolton Road.

Pretoria Judge Nkola Motata’s application to temporarily block the Johannesburg magistrate’s court from listening to recordings of his alleged drunken diatribe, was turned down on Tuesday. Magistrate Desmond Nair said he would not allow the defence’s application to have his ruling on the matter sent to the high court for review.

Investigating officer Captain Joash Dryden on Tuesday warned the Wynberg Regional Court that Najwa Petersen, accused of the murder of her husband Taliep, ”will be gone if she is released on bail”. Petersen’s senior counsel Herbert Raubenheimer, wanted Dryden to concede that Petersen had an ”arguable case”.

The drunken-driving trial of Pretoria high court judge Nkola Motata has been postponed until July 2 2008 when it will proceed for a full month. The postponement of the case came after Nair turned down an application by the defence to temporarily block the court from listening to recordings of Motata’s alleged drunken diatribe.
