Another year of doping leaves cycling tainted

Under a golden sun, Paolo Bettini capped a perfect day for cycling by outracing, outwitting and, finally, outsprinting everyone to win the world road race title. If ever there were a glorious highlight to a season, that was it. As the Italian crossed the line, though, there was little joy because he had been involved in a doping scandal.

Chiefs star has another match to win

Japan removes humpback whales from kill list

Japan’s whaling fleet in the Antarctic will avoid killing humpback whales for now, but will press on with plans to slay 1 000 other whales by early in the New Year, a government official said on Friday. Plans by Japan to include 50 endangered humpbacks in its annual hunt had sparked an outcry from activists.

Zuma cries foul over NPA charges

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has not contacted new African National Congress president Jacob Zuma about corruption charges against him, he said on Friday. ”I have not been contacted, my advisers have not been contacted, but the media have been contacted,” Zuma said in an interview.

Gold-medal moments

October 20 was South Africa’s biggest sporting day of the year. The venue was the Stade de France in Paris and the outcome was the right to call the Webb Ellis trophy ours for the next four years.
