Lesser-known sports crave spotlight in Thailand

They are chalk and cheese — an all-action sport and a quiet board game — but both are part of the attraction at the South-East Asian Games in north-eastern Thailand. Sepak takraw is being held in a stadium at the top of a shopping mall in front of raucous fans, while Go, a demonstration sport here, is taking place in a quiet university conference room.

Pistorius waits on Olympic dream

Oscar Pistorius, the self-described ”fastest thing on no legs”, retains both his sense of humour and confidence when he mulls the possibility that his Olympics dream could be about to be shattered. ”It has been my dream to run with the able-bodied and in the Olympics,” the South African double amputee tells Agence France-Presse.

Liverpool shine on European stage

Liverpool’s habit of leaving it to the last to qualify for the important stages of big tournaments was repeated on Tuesday as they inflicted a record 4-0 home defeat on Marseille to make the knockout stage of the Champions League. The 2005 Champions League winners’ victory probably also ensured that manager Rafael Benitez keeps his job.

JSE remains in red on world markets

The JSE remained in the red at midday on Wednesday, but was off its earlier lows as it recouped some of its sharp losses in the morning session. By noon, the JSE all-share index had lost 0,78%. The gold- and platinum-mining indices fell 2,22% and 1,8% respectively, while resources gave up 1,33%. Banks dipped 1,03%, while financials were off 0,58% and industrials shed 0,18%.

Citizen Kane Oscar fails to sell at auction

Citizen Kane is regularly cited as the greatest film of all time. But the Oscar its director, star and co-writer received for the epic didn’t prove so popular at an auction held in New York. The statuette presented to Orson Welles at the 1942 ceremony was expected to fetch up to ,2-million for the foundation that owns it.
