An attempt to get the principle of gender parity elevated to the top structures of the ANC was trounced on Monday night, the Mail & Guardian has learned.
The policy, also known as the 50/50 principle, is a steep change in empowerment in the ANC and requires that every alternative position available for leadership be reserved for a female candidate.

The United Nations General Assembly passed a non-binding resolution on Tuesday calling for a moratorium on the death penalty, overcoming protests from a bloc of states that said it undermined their sovereignty. The resolution, which calls for ”a moratorium on executions with a view to abolishing the death penalty,” was passed by a 104 to 54 vote, with 29 abstentions.

It was the Big Easy of Old who blitzed round the Outeniqua course in 62 strokes in today’s first round of his own Ernie Els Invitational, which is being played at Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate. Eight seemingly effortless birdies and an eagle on the par-five 17th saw Els finish three ahead of compatriot Retief Goosen.

Jacob Zuma, the populist politician, humiliated President Thabo Mbeki with a sweeping victory in the election for leader of the African National Congress on Tuesday night. Zuma, who survived a rape trial and his dismissal as the country’s deputy president by Mbeki over corruption allegations, took 60% of the nearly 4Â 000 votes at the party’s national conference.

At least 64 journalists were killed in 2007, making it the deadliest year in more than a decade with Iraq the most dangerous place in the world to report, a United States media watchdog said on Monday. About seven in 10 of the deaths in 2007 were murders, while the rest were combat-related deaths and deaths in dangerous assignments.

Gauteng’s economy remained under pressure in November although strong performances were reported in several sectors. The Gauteng business barometer decreased by 2,7% to 142 index points, compared with November last year. However, it is 1% higher than the level of one month ago.

The metropolitan council of Tshwane, despite the ongoing debate around the use of the name, is meeting its challenges head-on and seems certain to meet its goals, according to the city’s executive management. Executive mayor Dr Gwen Ramokgopa heads the 152-member council, which is led by an ANC majority.

Sedibeng, the district municipality comprising the municipalities of Midvaal, Lesedi and Emfuleni, is a district with a long-term plan that shows it is far from being reticent. The area is one of the poorest in southern Gauteng. Historically, the it was predominantly white and middle class.

The Vuna Awards, which took place this week, provide an incentive for municipalities, rewarding those that give their communities excellent services and governance. In keeping with its name (Vuna means “harvest together” in the Nguni family of languages), “the awards seek to encourage service excellence and to celebrate municipalities, which are sowing the seeds of genuine development."
