Negotiations between striking Hollywood writers and studios have collapsed, crushing expectations for a settlement of the costly walkout in its fifth week. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers announced on Friday that the round of talks that started on Tuesday had broken down.

South Korea’s largest oil spill reached part of the country’s scenic and environmentally sensitive western shore on Saturday as the coast guard struggled in high waves and strong winds to keep more oil from washing up on beaches. Hundreds of troops, police and residents used buckets to remove dense crude oil.

A criminal court has ordered the arrest of Liberia’s ex-president Gyude Bryant on allegations that he embezzled ,3-million while in office. Bryant, who led the nation for two years as a transitional president following the end of Liberia’s 14-year civil war, stepped down in 2005 after Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf won democratic presidential elections.

Half-centuries by Runako Morton and Marlon Samuels guided West Indies to a one-day series win over Zimbabwe at Bulawayo on Friday. West Indies won the fourth match by five wickets to take an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. Zimbabwe scored 232-9 after being put in to bat, and the West Indies replied with 234-5 to win with three overs to spare.

Former Fidentia boss J Arthur Brown and financial director Graham Maddock used R5,5-million in Infinity loyalty-programme funds to pay salaries and other expenses in other Fidentia companies, according to prosecutors. The two men appeared briefly in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

African National Congress (ANC) member Votani Majola was denied leave on Friday to appeal against a dismissed application to have the party’s 52nd national conference postponed. Majola returned to the Johannesburg High Court on Friday in a bid to have Judge Hilton Epstein allow him to take the matter to the Supreme Court of Appeal.

Much still needs to be done to clean up the Home Affairs Department, Director General Mavuso Msimang said on Friday. He was reacting to the arrests of five home affairs officials and a former official at the Watloo home affairs office in Pretoria on Friday. The six were arrested following months of investigation.
