Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki on Sunday appealed for calm as pre-election mayhem that has killed dozens gripped the country ahead of elections later this month. At least 16 people were killed, dozens of huts razed and 16 000 people displaced in the Molo district, about 170km north-west of Nairobi, police said.

Bloemfontein Celtic were held to a 1-1 draw by Thanda Royal Zulu in an exciting Premier Soccer League clash at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium on Sunday. Celtic netted in the seventh minute through Lebohang Kukane, and three minutes later Bernard Parker equalised for the struggling Royals team and earned them a valuable point.

Middlesbrough inflicted Arsenal’s first Premier League defeat of the season with a 2-1 win on Sunday to cut the Gunners’ lead over Manchester United at the top of the table to just one point. Ernie Els blew a two-stroke lead by hitting two balls into the water on the final hole of the Alfred Dunhill Championship, handing the win to John Bickerton. Els (73) took a triple-bogey on the par-five 18th, leaving Bickerton to win at 13-under 275 after a four-under 68 in the final round.

A Canadian pig farmer was convicted on Sunday of the serial killings of six women whose bodies were butchered like animals in his farm’s slaughterhouse. But the jury convicted Robert ”Willie” Pickton of a lesser charge of second-degree murder, not the first-degree murder charge he originally faced.
