It has taken the Movement for Democratic Change eight years to go from a being potent symbol of change to an organisation torn apart by divisive, childish rivalries and personality cults. And as the situation deteriorates, the party’s fractious and self-important leadership may irrevocably turn the once vibrant party into an empty shell, its once inspiring name and slogans into bywords for indecision and ineptitude.

Australians do not know whether they have just committed a very bold act or a very small one. By throwing out their conservative prime minister, John Howard, in Saturday’s election they may have dramatically tipped their nation away from the insularity, fear and materialism that he had encouraged.

It was unlikely that grounded airline Nationwide would be given permission for take-off to London on Sunday night, said the South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Inspectors had spent most of the day examining the Boeing 767 the airline intended using on the flight, said CAA aircraft safety executive manager Obert Chakarisa.

Wits University played to a 1-1 draw against Golden Arrows in a Premier Soccer League match played at Bidvest Stadium on Sunday afternoon. There was no score at half-time. Wits failed to maintain their winning momentum after thrashing Bloemfontein Celtic 2-0 last week at the same venue.

Herschelle Gibbs hit a majestic century as South Africa cruised to a series-clinching five-wicket win in the third and final one-day international against New Zealand at Newlands on Sunday. Gibbs made 119 off 101 balls as South Africa chased down New Zealand’s 238-8 with 28 balls to spare.

Chris Gayle and Runako Morton scored half-centuries in West Indies’ 110-run win over Zimbabwe in the second one-day international on Sunday. Gayle scored 58 before retiring injured and Morton hit 79 as the visitors levelled the five-match series at 1-1.

South Africa’s Trevor Immelman won the 27th edition of the Nedbank Golf Challenge on Sunday, in spite of bogeying the final three holes at the Gary Player Country Club. He outplayed England’s Justin Rose, who blew up with a double-bogey six at the last, in what turned into a nervy two-horse race between the two players in the final round.
