Zimbabwe has registered a 2,5% decline in the prevalence of HIV to 15,6% of the population, the authorities revealed in Harare on Wednesday. The latest decline is from 18,1% of the population in 2006 to 15,6% this year, or one in every seven people, Health Ministry officials were quoted as saying.

The restructuring of the police service was causing a drop in morale, South African Police Union spokesperson Barries Machakela told a seminar in Pretoria on Wednesday. ”We support restructuring, but the way it is done is not proper. Morale is low, members are disillusioned,” he said.

West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels will face an investigation by the national board over alleged links with a bookmaker during a one-day tour of India in January. The International Cricket Council said on Wednesday that investigation by its anti-corruption officials had found sufficient ground to ask the West Indies board to probe the issue further.

Afghan and Nato forces have killed 50 Taliban rebels in three days of clashes and surrounded 200 others who occupied civilian homes in southern Afghanistan, police said on Wednesday. Civilians were fleeing on motorbikes, tractors, cars and animals piled with their belongings amid the fighting, provincial police chief Sayed Aqa Saqib said.

South Africa recorded a trade deficit of R4,3-billion in September, compared to August’s R9,1-billion shortfall, the South African Revenue Service said on Wednesday. Economists polled by Reuters last week had forecast a deficit of R6,4-billion, but the number is notoriously volatile and hard to predict.

Beijing Olympics organisers apologised on Wednesday after suspending ticket sales following a booking system meltdown, their first major blunder in preparations for next year’s Games. A bitter Jake White announced on Wednesday that he is to quit as coach of South Africa’s World Cup-winning rugby team, accusing Springbok bosses of bouncing him out of the job. White, who has been linked to coaching positions with rival national sides, said he would take the team to Britain next month for matches against Wales the Barbarians.

A Spanish court on Wednesday convicted 21 people of involvement in the 2004 Madrid train bombings, but acquitted a man accused of helping mastermind the al-Qaeda-inspired attack that claimed nearly 200 lives. The heaviest sentences were handed out to two Moroccans and a Spaniard, Jose Emilio Suarez Trashorras.

A 20-year-old Durban man who held a Lenasia South family hostage for nearly six hours on Wednesday has given himself up. Donovan Naidoo had earlier released two of the hostages, 23-year-old Denise Bathman and her one-year-old son Jodash. He later released the other two hostages, 27-year-old Gerald Bathman and 16-year-old Praise Archary.
