The wife of a British man who disappeared more than five years ago but then turned up alive at the weekend has herself gone missing, media reports said on Tuesday. John Darwin (57), who was thought to have died in a canoeing accident, walked in to a London police station and declared he was a missing person, but had no memory of where he had been.

The United Nations refugee agency on Tuesday warned that renewed fighting between government troops and rebels in eastern Chad has limited its access to refugee camps amid a heightened sense of insecurity. The fighting has not sparked any exodus but has ratcheted up tensions and worries among vulnerable sections of society, the UN said.

Kumar Sangakkara became the first batsman to hit 150-plus scores in four consecutive Tests as Sri Lanka pressed for victory in the first Test against England on Tuesday. Israel said on Tuesday it believed that Iran had restarted its atomic-weapons programme and that a United States-backed campaign to curb Tehran’s nuclear ambitions must continue despite a US report it had halted the work. ”It is vital to pursue efforts to prevent Iran from developing a capability like this,” Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told reporters.

The joint estate of former Fidentia boss J Arthur Brown and his wife, Susan, was on Tuesday placed under provisional sequestration by the Cape High Court. This followed an application by the curators of the Fidentia group of companies, who claimed that the Browns owed Fidentia just over R24-million.

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) troops clashed with rebels in the country’s east for a second straight day on Tuesday as they sought to take control of a strategic village, the army said. Fighting in the past two days has killed four soldiers and injured about 20.

Consumer confidence has surprisingly rebounded to close to its previous record, according to the First National Bank (FNB)/Stellenbosch University Bureau for Economic Research’s (BER) latest FNB/BER consumer confidence index, which was released on Tuesday. A civil society organisation says it is to launch Equality Court proceedings on behalf of an Eastern Cape youth said to have been forcibly circumcised. It claims the youth was subjected to traditional circumcision in March this year after he had himself circumcised at East London’s Frere Hospital three months earlier.
