Jake White’s agent contacts Australia

South Africa’s World Cup-winning coach Jake White has shown interest in the vacant Wallabies post via his agent, the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) said on Tuesday. ARU high-performance manager Pat Howard confirmed that agent Craig Livingstone contacted him on White’s behalf last week, but he had heard nothing further.

Turkey pounds Kurdish rebels, warns US over ties

The Turkish army pounded Kurdish rebels near the Iraqi border on Tuesday as Ankara warned that ties with Washington would suffer as long as the separatists enjoyed sanctuary in northern Iraq. Cobra helicopters fired missiles at rebel positions on the Cudi Mountains, which border Iraq, where fighting continued for a second day.

Mvela to buy up to 30% of Johncom media

South African investment firm Mvelaphanda has reached agreement with fund management group Allan Gray to buy up to 30% of Johnnic Communications’ media unit, it said on Tuesday. Mvelaphanda said it will buy a minumum of 25,1% and a maximum of 30% of Johncom’s media business, provisionally named Opco.

Manuel: Economy shows signs of strain

Finance Minister Trevor Manuel said at the launch of the latest Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement on Tuesday that while the past four years have been good for the South African economy, it has begun to show signs of strain. He noted that these signs of strain are reflected in rising inflation and a high current-account deficit.
