Egyptian police arrested 25 members of the opposition Muslim Brotherhood organisation late on Tuesday in the oasis city of Fayoum on charges of holding meetings to prepare for upcoming local elections. Long ignored and left to supporters of the ruling party, municipal elections have gained in importance following a 2005 change in the electoral law.

The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) will not ask President Thabo Mbeki to step down as a nominee for the top leadership position in the ruling party. ”We have got no right to ask anybody who has been nominated to step down. It’s undemocratic,” ANCYL president Fikile Mbalula said in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Oprah Winfrey has met with the family of the first pupil to complain of abuse at her elite school for disadvantaged South African girls, and invited the girl to return to the academy. The United States magazine People quoted the father of the pupil as saying they met for two hours with Winfrey on Sunday.

South African Tourism says that tourism has grown steadily every year since the introduction of the Tourism Growth Strategy in 2002. Chief operating officer Didi Moyle said on Wednesday, in presenting research findings from 2002 to 2006, that there were 35,4-million foreign arrivals in South Africa over the period.

More than one billion trees have been planted around the world in 2007, with Ethiopia and Mexico leading in the drive to combat climate change, a United Nations report said Wednesday. The Nairobi-based UN Environment Programme said the mass tree planting will help mitigate effects of pollution and environmental deterioration.

The Johannesburg city council is investigating the deaths of about 200 ducks at Zoo Lake in Parkview, spokesperson Nthatise Modingoane said on Wednesday. He said the ducks had died sometime last week and that two possible causes were being investigated. These were hail and botulism bacteria, which kill fauna.
