World Bank launches new Aids strategy for Africa

Overtaken as the largest funder of global HIV/Aids programmes, the World Bank is now focusing on easing the economic damage inflicted by the syndrome in Africa and finding ways of controlling its spread through better prevention, care and treatment. Global funding for HIV/Aids reached -billion in 2007 compared to ,6-billion available in 2001.

Natwest Three plead guilty to $7,3m fraud

A trio of British bankers dubbed the ”Natwest Three” face 37 months in prison after pleading guilty to stealing ,3-million tied to the collapse of Enron. The men, who worked for Natwest’s investment banking arm, concocted a deal in 2000 with two senior Enron executives who have since been jailed.

1 000th rare whale shark identified in Mozambique

The 1 000th whale shark, a rare and threatened species, has been discovered by researchers using a global programme in which eco-tourists and scientists identify new sharks and lodge photographs on an online library. ”It’s a major milestone, for science and for conservation,” said Ecocean project leader Brad Norman in Australia.

Two in court for Austrian’s murder

Two men are expected to appear in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Thursday in connection with the murder of a former Austrian footballer on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast. Police spokesperson Superintendent Zandra Hechter said three men had been taken into custody — one of whom was arrested on Saturday for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.
