A record television audience is expected to watch the 2010 Soccer World Cup preliminary draw when it takes place in Durban on Sunday afternoon. World Soccer governing body Fifa spokesperson Nicolas Maingot said on Friday that while television viewer figures would be hard to estimate, there would be 34 television channels broadcasting the draw live.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert warned on Friday that the failure of new peace efforts would be ”deadly” as new polls showed Israelis and Palestinians equally pessimistic about its chances of success. Most Israelis and Palestinians do not think the meeting, opening on Tuesday in the United States, will succeed, according to separate opinion polls.

More than 150 passengers and crew escaped unhurt after their cruise ship struck an iceberg in the Antarctic Ocean and started to sink, an Argentine coast-guard official and a spokesperson for the ship’s owner said on Friday. ”Everyone is safe and accounted for,” Susan Hayes, a spokesperson for ship owner Gap Adventures, told CNN.

Kenya’s President Mwai Kibaki has closed a gap with leading challenger Raila Odinga and is now running neck-and-neck with him ahead of elections in five weeks’ time, the country’s leading poll service said on Friday. The latest Steadman poll gave Odinga 43,6% to Kibaki’s 43,3%.
