South Africa defeated defending champions England 15-6 in a tense World Cup final at the Stade de France in Paris on Saturday. South Africa, the 1995 champions, struck first after seven minutes when England centre Mathew Tait was penalised for holding on to the ball and Percy Montgomery slotted over a comfortable penalty in front of the posts.

The British government is welcome to stay away from the Africa Union (AU) and European Union (EU) summit in December, said African National Congress secretary general, Kgalema Motlanthe. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has stated he would not attend the summit if Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is allowed to attend.

Mohammad Yousuf hit a brilliant century to lead Pakistan to a 25-run victory over South Africa in a day-night international in Lahore on Saturday and level the series 1-1. Yousuf’s 143-ball 117 ensured Pakistan posted a fighting 265-9 before the home team overcame poor fielding to restrict the SA to 240 in 49.3 overs.

A dozen main districts of the Zimbabwean capital were without power for the fifth straight day on Saturday. The state electricity company blamed technical faults for the massive power failure. A power surge after load-shedding on Monday blew a main high-voltage supply cable, the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority said.

Philippine police confirmed on Saturday that military-grade explosives caused a powerful blast in an upscale Manila shopping mall and that they were reviewing security camera footage to look for suspects. The Glorietta mall blast at lunchtime on Friday killed nine people and wounded 120, although many of those wounded have been discharged after treatment.

Twenty-six Malawi opposition supporters died on Friday night when the vehicle they were travelling in to a party conference overturned, police said on Saturday. The Alliance for Democracy members were travelling to Lilongwe from Blantyre for a meeting to elect a new leadership ahead of Malawi’s 2009 presidential elections.
