Kallis returns to T20 action against New Zealand

Jacques Kallis will play for South Africa in Friday’s Twenty20 international against New Zealand, captain Graeme Smith said on Thursday. Kallis, the nation’s leading run-scorer in Tests and one-day internationals, was controversially omitted from the squad for the Twenty20 World Championship, which they exited before the semifinal stage, hosted by South Africa in September.

Fresh riots break out in Dakar

Sporadic riots broke out in the Senegalese capital on Thursday against a ban on street hawking the day after one of the country’s most violent protests in recent decades. Police said at least 200 people have been arrested following violent protests that rocked the otherwise stable West African country on Wednesday.

Strong earthquake hits Papua New Guinea

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6,7 rocked eastern Papua New Guinea on Thursday, causing some damage and plunging parts of the coastal city of Lae into darkness, officials and witnesses said. The quake hit just before 6.48pm local time with the epicentre about 400km north of the capital, Port Moresby.

Arab leaders in Egypt ahead of peace meeting

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was hosting a summit with the Palestinian and Jordanian leaders on Thursday as Arab foreign ministers mull whether to join a United States-sponsored peace conference next week. Mubarak met Jordan’s King Abdullah II in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to discuss preparations for the conference.

Hoskins: I stood by Jake White

South African rugby boss Oregan Hoskins says he played a key role in helping outgoing Springbok coach Jake White survive his four-year tenure. Without his support, Hoskins said on Thursday, White would not have been able to continue in his role as coach of the national side. ”All I want to say is that my conscience is abundantly clear towards Jake. I’ve stood by Jake.”

WHO says 164 dead from Rift Valley Fever in Sudan

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Thursday that 164 people have died from Rift Valley Fever in Sudan, more than half as many again as the latest figure given by the Sudanese government. The WHO called on local media, community and religious leaders to ensure people know what measures to take to reduce the risk of infection.

Uganda says mysterious fever contained

Uganda’s Health Ministry on Thursday announced it had contained a mysterious fever that killed 14 people and infected 33 others in the past three weeks. Director of medical services Sam Zaramba said no new cases had been reported in the past two days and those infected were responding to treatment.
