A gross violation of my rights by the M&G

In September 2006 I sought to prevent the Mail & Guardian from publishing a story detailing allegations of possible fraud, violations of tender rules and contraventions of the Public Finance Management Act that took place while I was head of the South African Post Office, writes Maanda Manyatshe.

Land Bank’s long decline

A breakdown in agricultural support structures appears to have sparked a crisis in the Land Bank. Allegations of mismanagement have dogged the institution in recent years, but the emerging farmers the bank is meant to help have been left worst off.

Men who speak with fists

”The first time I hit her was because she ignored me when I asked her where’s my dark green socks. I thought: ‘How can you not listen to me when you are my wife living here in this house that I built for you with my own hands. I’m the father of our children. Lots of talk but very little gain

The last stretch of talks mediated by President Thabo Mbeki will be a key test of Zimbabwe’s opposition Movement for Democratic Change’s (MDC) ability to press meaningful concessions from Zanu-PF. Strait fight

As the United States increasingly looks to China for help over tackling problem issues such as Iran, Burma and Darfur, concern is growing in Taiwan that the island’s sole international protector may be dropping its guard. The de facto independence of Taiwan, viewed by Beijing as a renegade province, depends in the last resort on American defensive guarantees and arms supplies.

DG reports: a view from the other side

The Mail & Guardian’s recent directors general scorecard was interesting, but my experience suggests that the optimism of the accompanying editorial might be misplaced. Certainly, the evaluation of my successor, Jabu Sindane, was somewhat unfair because a flawed process handed him a poisoned chalice, writes Mike Muller.

Poker-faced flirts, all

Friends occasionally come to me for advice, which is odd, because one look at my shambling semi-existence should be enough to convince them I’m in no position to offer guidance on anything. I wouldn’t trust myself to tell someone which end of a cup to drink from. But still they come, writes Charlie Brooker.
