The United Nations has slashed its estimates of how many people are infected with HIV/Aids, from nearly 40-million to 33-million. In a report to be issued on Tuesday, the UN says revised estimates on HIV in India account for a large part of the decrease.

South African oil refiner Engen has slowed operations at its 180 000 barrel-per-day plant in Durban after an oil tank caught fire, although the blaze did not damage the refining facilities. The fire, which continues to burn, started on Monday evening when a petrol tank containing about seven million litres of petrol exploded.

Strict visa requirements for Zimbabweans intending to travel to South Africa are set to be reviewed following talks between the two countries, a media report said on Tuesday. The talks were held under the joint permanent commission on defence and security in South Africa last week, the report said.

A businessman who was arrested because his Porsche Cayenne was equipped with an anti-speed-trap device has been allowed to pay an admission-of-guilt fine, a media report said on Tuesday. Japan began fingerprinting foreigners entering the country on Tuesday in an anti-terrorism policy that has sparked complaints from human right activists, business travellers and long-term residents. Some foreign visitors arriving at Narita were unfazed by the new procedures, which involve electronic scanning of both index fingers.
