Spain’s Oscar Pereiro on Monday received the yellow jersey from the 2006 Tour de France at a ceremony in Madrid, officially replacing United States rider Floyd Landis, who was stripped of his title for doping. ”This is an emotional moment, a day that I will never forget,” said Pereiro after Tour director Christian Prudhomme awarded him the jersey.

Chief executive of Pick ‘n Pay Nick Badminton told analysts in Cape Town on Tuesday that although food was often the last to be affected by inflation, "we feel that it will be a little tight in the next six months". He said that internal inflation within the group was showing a 7% increase for the full year, but warned that August showed inflation at 9,5%.

Turkey on Tuesday accused Washington of playing "petty" politics and threatened reprisals if the United States Congress votes on a motion branding the World War I massacre of Armenians by Ottoman Turks an act of genocide. "We see that common sense is gradually losing ground to petty political calculations," Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.
